The University of Idaho Department of Theatre Arts has launched a seven-performance run of George Orwell’s “1984” at the Forge Theater in Moscow. The stage adaptation, developed by Robert Owens, Wilton E. Hall Jr., and William A. Miles Jr., opens with a preview performance Thursday evening.
Craig A. Miller, an associate professor of theatre at the university, directs the production. He noted that the novel’s themes regarding surveillance and individual autonomy remain pertinent in modern society.
“’1984′ is more relevant today than ever,” Miller said. “The struggle the characters face to maintain their humanity in an increasingly surveilled and controlled world is something I know will resonate with audiences.”
The play explores the tension between state control and the human spirit. Bryce Gowey stars as Winston Smith, while Cambree Miller plays Julia. The production runs through Sunday, Oct. 18.
Tickets for the general public range from $6 to $26. University of Idaho students may attend performances free of charge. Tickets are available through the university’s ticketing system.
