University of Idaho Launches State’s First Industrial Engineering Degrees

The University of Idaho introduced the state’s first bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial and systems engineering on October 5, 2026. The College of Engineering established the programs to address workforce demands across Idaho’s growing industrial sectors.

New offerings include a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Master of Engineering in industrial and systems engineering. These credentials target careers in manufacturing, artificial intelligence, automation, healthcare, transportation, agriculture, food processing, and supply chain management.

Javier Calvo-Amodio noted that Idaho’s semiconductor, agribusiness, advanced manufacturing, and aerospace industries are expanding, creating a heightened demand for engineers capable of improving operational efficiency.

The curriculum focuses on integrating AI and machine learning into industrial systems while accounting for human operators. Ean Ng explained that students utilize simulation, operations research, robotics, and other technologies to support decision-making in complex systems.

Undergraduate participants may engage with industry partners through the Interdisciplinary Senior Capstone Design Program. Graduate students can pursue either a research-based thesis or a professional non-thesis track, specializing in areas such as systems engineering, operations research, engineering management, smart manufacturing, and sustainable systems.

The master’s programs are available entirely online. Bachelor’s degree candidates may complete their first two years at the University of Idaho or an Idaho community college before finishing upper-division coursework remotely.

National labor data projects an 11 percent employment growth for industrial engineers between 2024 and 2034, significantly outpacing the 3 percent average for all occupations. The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates approximately 25,200 annual openings in the field, with a median annual wage of $101,140.
