University of Idaho Study Confirms Ringtails Moving Into Southern Idaho Mountains

Nocturnal Predators Found in Sawtooth National Forest

Researchers at the University of Idaho have documented ringtails—cat-sized nocturnal mammals rarely seen this far north—establishing a presence in the mountains south of Twin Falls, marking the first systematic scientific confirmation of the species in Idaho.

The survey, conducted in the Rock Creek canyon system within Sawtooth National Forest during early 2023, deployed 49 camera traps over a three-month period from February through May. Researchers recorded nine independent detections of ringtails across six camera locations, with two animals photographed more than three miles apart within hours of each other—all sightings occurring at night.

Ringtails are small, omnivorous members of the raccoon family, typically inhabiting desert environments across the American Southwest. They derive their name from their distinctive black-and-white banded tails. Until this study, Idaho had no confirmed scientific documentation of the species’ presence, despite more than 20 years of occasional anecdotal sightings reported by residents and outdoor enthusiasts.

Range Expansion Linked to Environmental Changes

David Ausband, a University of Idaho researcher involved in the study, said the findings represent a significant discovery for understanding wildlife distribution in the region. “Finding ringtails at six locations gives us the strongest evidence yet that the species has expanded into southern Idaho and may have a lasting presence here,” Ausband said.

The research, published in April in the journal Ecology and Evolution, suggests that expanding juniper woodlands along the northern edge of the species’ traditional range may be creating suitable habitat for ringtails. Environmental shifts in vegetation patterns appear to be enabling the animals to survive in conditions previously inhospitable to them.

Idaho’s state conservation ranking currently lists ringtails as nonbreeding and present only accidentally or occasionally, reflecting the animal’s historically marginal status in the state. The new study, however, indicates the species’ range may be shifting northward more substantially than previously understood.

Questions Remain About Permanent Establishment

Despite the encouraging findings, researchers remain cautious about declaring ringtails as firmly established in Idaho. Ausband noted that while the team documented multiple individual animals, they have not yet confirmed breeding activity or determined whether the animals remain in the area year-round.

Earlier camera surveys conducted in the region had failed to detect ringtails, suggesting either that the animals are newly arrived or that previous survey methods were insufficient to capture their presence. The Rock Creek canyon system’s juniper woodlands and rocky terrain appear to provide the specific habitat features ringtails require.

The research contributes to growing evidence that climate and environmental changes are shifting wildlife distributions across western North America. As juniper woodlands expand into areas historically dominated by other vegetation types—a trend documented across the Great Basin and surrounding regions—species adapted to those habitats may follow.

The study demonstrates the importance of long-term, systematic wildlife monitoring in understanding how animal populations respond to changing environmental conditions. The University of Idaho’s findings open questions about what other species might be expanding their ranges into Idaho as habitat conditions shift, and what management implications those changes might carry for state wildlife agencies.

Future research will likely focus on determining whether Idaho’s ringtail population is self-sustaining or merely transient. Long-term monitoring of the Rock Creek canyon system and other potential habitat areas will be necessary to answer questions about breeding success, seasonal movement patterns, and the true northern limit of the species’ expanding range. State wildlife agencies may eventually need to consider management strategies if ringtails become a permanent fixture in Idaho’s wildlife community.
