Yale University law professor Akhil Reed Amar is scheduled to give the University of Idaho’s 2026 Sherman J. Bellwood Memorial Lecture on Monday, Oct. 26.
The program is free and will be held in the International Ballroom at the Bruce M. Pitman Center on the Moscow campus. Introductions and opening remarks begin at 3:30 p.m.; Amar’s address starts at 4 p.m.
Amar, Yale’s Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, has taught constitutional law there since 1985. His talk is titled “From ‘Created Equal’ to ‘Born Equal’ – with Special Emphasis on America’s Northwest and the Recent Birthright Citizenship Case.”
His newest book considers the years 1840 through 1920 and addresses the 13th, 14th, 15th and 19th Amendments.
Judge Sherman J. Bellwood’s endowment created the memorial lecture series in 1987 and continues to pay for the event. The lecture receives no state appropriations or student-fee money.
Earlier Bellwood lecturers have included Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Antonin Scalia and John Roberts.
Space is limited, and attendees are asked to register in advance.
