Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson will retire at the end of November, concluding a tenure that spans more than three decades. Thompson, who first took office on November 9, 1992, has served the county for 34 years.
In a letter to residents, Thompson acknowledged the length of his service and stated that “the time has come for me to move on.”
Thompson is the 19th person to hold the office since the position was established in 1902. His career marks him as the longest-serving prosecutor in Latah County history and the longest-serving elected prosecutor in the state of Idaho.
Succession Process
The vacancy created by Thompson’s departure will be filled through a selection process involving local party leadership and county government officials. The Latah County Democratic Central Committee will submit a list of candidates to the Latah County Board of Commissioners.
The commissioners will select a replacement from that list. The appointee will serve through the end of Thompson’s current term, which expires in January 2029.
