The Idaho Repertory Theatre Drama Camp for Kids will present a new adaptation of “Robin Hood” at the University of Idaho this weekend, marking the world premiere of a script written by a graduate student in the theatre arts program.
The production runs August 1-2 at Hartung Theater, located at 625 Stadium Drive in Moscow. Two performances will be held each day at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. General admission tickets are $16, with free admission for children 12 and under.
A Fresh Take on a Classic Tale
The adaptation, penned by Millie R. Schacher, a University of Idaho theatre arts graduate student, reimagines the familiar legend with an original plot twist. In this version, Robin faces accusations of kidnapping the Sheriff of Nottingham’s son, Maverick. The Sheriff responds by imposing a heavy tax on Nottingham unless the boy is returned, setting the stage for conflict and resolution.
Camp director Christina Brandt emphasized the significance of the production. “Robin Hood is so much more than a summer camp production,” Brandt said. “It’s an opportunity for young artists to be part of a world premiere.”
Young Artists Learn Behind the Scenes
Beyond the scripted narrative, campers engaged in the full range of theatrical work, from acting and scenic painting to costume creation and prop building. This hands-on approach gives participants experience in multiple aspects of theatre production.
Assistant camp director Cory Williamson highlighted the commitment the young performers brought to the project. “Producing a play is truly a tour de force, and these kids have embraced every challenge with incredible creativity, dedication and heart,” Williamson said.
The camp represents part of the University of Idaho’s broader engagement with Moscow’s educational and cultural community, where the university serves as a resource for both academic programs and public programming.
