Moscow Native Giancarlo Castillo Serves Aboard USS Nimitz

Petty Officer 3rd Class Giancarlo Castillo, a Moscow, Idaho, native, serves aboard the USS Nimitz, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier operating from Norfolk, Virginia.

Castillo graduated from the Idaho Youth ChalleNGe Academy in 2021. He initially planned to become a Marine before enlisting in the Navy and later deciding to reenlist.

“I always wanted to join the military,” Castillo said.

He identified his decision to reenlist as his proudest accomplishment in the Navy.

“My proudest accomplishment in the Navy is making the decision to reenlist,” Castillo said.

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) 1st Class Riley serves as Castillo’s mentor and recruiter.

The USS Nimitz is 1,092 feet long, 252 feet wide and weighs more than 100,000 tons. More than 5,000 sailors serve aboard the carrier.

The Navy is marking its contribution to national defense as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence. Navy officials say the service has sailed the globe for 250 years, while aircraft carriers have projected power and carried out other missions for more than a century. About 90% of global commerce travels by sea.
