Latah County law enforcement agencies issued a stern warning against the circulation of unredacted crime scene photographs from the 2022 University of Idaho murders.
The Latah County Prosecutor’s Office, Moscow Police Department, and Idaho State Police released a joint statement on Tuesday condemning the potential leak. Officials stated they became aware that an unknown source had shared graphic images with journalists and social media commentators.
The photographs depict the victims of the November 13, 2022, killings in Moscow. Law enforcement emphasized that distributing such material violates professional ethics and invades the privacy of the deceased and their families.
“Those entrusted with access to such material must safeguard it and violating that trust and any professional and ethical duties required by such position of trust, is unconscionable,” the agencies wrote in the statement.
An Idaho judge previously issued a permanent order barring the City of Moscow from releasing photos or video from the crime scene without significant redactions. The joint statement reinforced that legal restriction, urging the public not to post, share, or distribute the unredacted images.
Officials noted that spreading these photos would compound the grief of those affected by the tragedy. They expressed sympathy for the victims’ families, friends, and loved ones, stating that no family should endure the added trauma of knowing images from a loved one’s final moments are circulating publicly.
The agencies called on anyone with access to the material to respect the court order and the dignity of the victims. The statement served as a reminder that public safety professionals have a duty to protect sensitive evidence from unauthorized dissemination.
