University of Idaho Bridge Project Begins July 20; Campus Traffic Restrictions Expected Through Spring

Interstate highway

The University of Idaho will begin replacing the Perimeter Bridge on Monday, July 20, triggering a phased traffic management plan that will affect campus circulation for approximately ten months.

During the initial construction phase, Perimeter Drive south of Idaho State Highway 8 will remain open to two-way traffic, though drivers should expect lane shifts and potential delays. Pedestrians will be routed along temporary detour paths as work progresses.

The project timeline includes the reopening of Nez Perce Drive in mid-August, after which Perimeter Drive will close completely to allow full bridge replacement work. The university anticipates finishing the project by May 2027.

The bridge replacement addresses both structural renewal and drainage concerns at the crossing. Funding comes through the State of Idaho’s Deferred Maintenance Initiative, which prioritizes critical infrastructure repairs across public institutions.

Additional detour information and traffic updates will be released as construction plans are finalized. The university recommends that faculty, staff, and students allow extra time for commutes and monitor campus announcements for real-time adjustments to routing.

The project reflects the university’s continued investment in campus infrastructure and pedestrian safety. For current updates on construction progress and traffic management, the university community is advised to consult the official facilities and planning channels.
