U of I Students to Showcase Interactive Furniture Designs at 1912 Center Event

Third-year interior design students at the University of Idaho will display custom furniture pieces they created during the spring semester at a free public exhibition scheduled for early May in downtown Moscow.

The College of Art and Architecture announced plans this week to hold the Moscow Furniture Show on Saturday, May 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the 1912 Center, located at 412 E. Third Street. The evening event will feature student work alongside furniture from professional designers across the region.

Event Fills Gap Left by Postponed Boise Gala

University faculty organized the showcase after learning that the Chair Affair Gala, an annual event hosted by the Interior Designers of Idaho in Boise, would not take place this year due to organizational restructuring. Rather than miss the opportunity to display student work, instructors in the Interior Architecture and Design Program decided to create their own platform for students to present finished projects.

Tharique De Silva, an assistant professor of interior architecture and design who helped organize the show, said the event serves multiple purposes for students enrolled in the program. It provides a venue to demonstrate technical skills while also connecting aspiring designers with established professionals working in Idaho and neighboring states.

“This exhibit allows for our program and instructional team to celebrate the hard work and successes of our students, while giving the students themselves the opportunity to demonstrate how their created pieces can invite conversation and connection,” De Silva said in a statement released by the university.

Interactive Designs Invite Public Participation

Student furniture pieces on display will incorporate interactive elements that require some form of sensory engagement from viewers, according to university officials. Organizers have designed the show to encourage hands-on participation rather than passive observation.

“This is exemplified by the theme of the furniture pieces requiring some form of sensory response or component – something we hope that the show’s visitors will enjoy interacting with,” De Silva said.

Attendees will have the chance to vote for their preferred student designs across four award categories. Winners will be determined by public ballot during the event.

Professional Designers Welcome to Exhibit

The show will include work from local Moscow craftspeople as well as furniture designers based elsewhere in the region. Design professionals interested in displaying built furniture at the exhibition can participate for a small fee.

Event organizers have lined up live music for the evening, along with food and beverages sourced from local vendors. Raffle prizes donated by Moscow businesses and regional design firms will also be available.

Admission to the Moscow Furniture Show is free, and the event is open to all members of the public. Additional details about the exhibition are available by contacting De Silva at tdesilva@uidaho.edu.

What Comes Next

The May 2 event marks the first time University of Idaho interior design students have hosted a dedicated furniture showcase in Moscow. Whether the exhibition becomes an annual tradition will likely depend on attendance and community response to the inaugural show. For now, the event provides third-year students in the program with a professional exhibition opportunity that had not been available locally before this spring.
