Seatbelt emphasis highlights importance of buckling up as Idaho enters 100 Deadliest Days

Idaho State Police Launch Seatbelt Enforcement Push as 100 Deadliest Days Begin

POCATELLO, Idaho — Law enforcement agencies across eastern Idaho are stepping up pressure on unbuckled drivers as the state enters what safety officials call the 100 Deadliest Days — the stretch of summer travel between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal crash rates historically climb.

The Southeast Idaho Traffic Safety Task Force conducted coordinated patrols on May 18 through communities in the region, targeting seatbelt and child restraint violations. Idaho State Police troopers from the Pocatello and Idaho Falls districts joined officers from the Montpelier Police Department in the single-day sweep.

Enforcement Numbers from the One-Day Operation

The joint effort produced significant activity across the patrol area. Officers and troopers made roughly 217 contacts with motorists throughout the day. Of those, 21 resulted in seatbelt citations, with another 60 citations issued for other violations. Three individuals were arrested during the operation, and 140 drivers received warnings.

The numbers underscore how common seatbelt non-compliance remains on Idaho roadways, even as public awareness campaigns have been running for years. Child restraint compliance was also a focus of the patrols, with law enforcement reminding parents and guardians of their legal responsibility to ensure children are secured in age-appropriate restraint systems.

Summer Travel Raises the Stakes

The timing of the enforcement push is deliberate. As summer road trips begin and traffic volumes rise across Highway 95, Highway 8, and other Latah County and statewide corridors, crash risks increase alongside them. The 100 Deadliest Days designation reflects a documented pattern: more vehicles on the road, more distracted and fatigued drivers, and more opportunities for serious collisions.

Authorities are urging all motorists to slow down, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, build extra time into travel plans, and — above all — buckle up on every trip. A seatbelt remains the single most effective protection a driver or passenger has in the event of a crash.

The fatal consequences of unrestrained driving are not abstract in Idaho. A recent crash near St. Maries claimed the lives of two Potlatch residents in a single-vehicle incident, a reminder of how quickly roadway situations can turn deadly in this region.

The Idaho State Police and regional task force partners are expected to continue targeted enforcement efforts throughout the summer months as part of a broader push to reduce crash fatalities before Labor Day.

What Comes Next

Law enforcement agencies statewide are expected to maintain elevated traffic safety patrols through the summer travel season. Motorists across Latah County and greater northern Idaho should anticipate continued seatbelt and distracted-driving enforcement at various points along major travel routes. Drivers with questions about child restraint requirements or seatbelt laws can contact the Idaho State Police or their local law enforcement agency for guidance.
