Two Potlatch Residents Dead After UTV Plunges Into River Near St. Maries

A man and woman from Potlatch lost their lives late Friday after a utility terrain vehicle they were riding in veered off a road, tumbled down an embankment, and plunged into a river near St. Maries in Benewah County.

Idaho State Police reported the crash occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. along the 9000 block of Railroad Grade Road. The two occupants — a 52-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman — were riding in a 2023 Can-Am Maverick Sport when the vehicle left the roadway. Neither was wearing a seat belt. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

What Comes Next: Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. Authorities have not yet released the names of the two victims pending notification of family members.
