Illegal Fireworks Spark Attic Fire at Moscow Duplex on Independence Day

Sawtooth Valley, Idaho

Moscow Fire Contained After Aerial Fireworks Ignite Residence

A structure fire erupted in a Moscow duplex on July 3 after aerial fireworks ignited the attic, authorities said. The blaze was reported at approximately 8:58 p.m. at a residence in the 400 block of Adams Street.

Moscow Fire Department personnel arrived within four minutes of the emergency call and discovered smoke and fire visible in the exterior landscaped area. The fire had already spread into the duplex attic space. No occupants were home at the time of the incident, and firefighters, law enforcement, and emergency responders sustained no injuries during the suppression effort.

Investigators determined that aerial fireworks caused the fire. Aerial fireworks are illegal under Idaho law, yet remain a persistent cause of residential fires during the Independence Day holiday period. Moscow Fire Department and Moscow Rural Fire District coordinated the response, with assistance from Moscow Police Department. Whitcom 911 Communications coordinated dispatch and emergency services.

Reminder on Fireworks Restrictions

The incident underscores the fire risk posed by prohibited fireworks in residential areas. Idaho residents are prohibited from using aerial fireworks, which launch burning materials into the air and can easily ignite roofs, attics, and landscaping. Ground-level fireworks carry lower risk but remain subject to local ordinances and fire season restrictions.

Homeowners in Latah County should verify local fire codes before using any fireworks and ensure that family members and guests understand the legal and safety boundaries. Even small aerial fireworks can cause significant property damage and endanger neighboring structures.

What Comes Next

The cause determination will likely prompt a review of the residence’s condition and insurance claims. Residents experiencing similar incidents or possessing illegal fireworks are encouraged to contact Moscow Fire Department for information on proper disposal and safety practices. For broader fire safety guidance, resources are available through the University of Idaho Extension and local emergency management offices.

Those with information about illegal fireworks use in Latah County can contact Moscow Police Department or the Moscow Fire Department non-emergency line. Smoke alarms and early detection remain critical for protecting residents in multi-unit structures, as demonstrated in recent Moscow fire incidents.
