University of Idaho sophomore Hanna Tait won the Big Sky Conference heptathlon championship Thursday in Portland, Oregon, capturing her second career outdoor title in the grueling seven-event competition.
The Grafton, New South Wales native dominated the two-day competition from start to finish, ultimately winning by 205 points over the rest of the field. Tait’s performance marks her second major multi-event title of the season after she won the indoor pentathlon earlier this year.
Record-Breaking Long Jump Extends Lead
Tait delivered a commanding performance Thursday morning in the long jump, posting a facility record with a leap of 5.83 meters. The jump earned her nearly 800 points and significantly widened her advantage heading into the final events of the competition.
Leading by almost 300 points as competitors moved to the javelin throw, Tait launched a 34.43-meter throw on her final attempt, which measures out to 112 feet, 11 inches. The solid throw helped secure her position atop the standings with one event remaining.
Closing Out Victory in the 800 Meters
In the final event of the heptathlon, the 800-meter run, Tait maintained her position in the middle of the pack throughout the two-lap race. She crossed the finish line in 2 minutes, 32.27 seconds, collecting an additional 665 points to seal the championship victory.
With the win, Tait becomes only the third Vandal in program history to capture both the women’s indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon titles in the same season. She is the first Idaho athlete to accomplish the feat since Ulrike Hartz achieved it at the 2010 WAC Championship.
Tait’s Competition Continues Friday
The sophomore’s time in Portland is far from finished. She is scheduled to compete in both the 100-meter hurdles and long jump on Friday as the Big Sky Conference outdoor championships continue.
Graduate student Belén García Arias also turned in a strong finish to her final collegiate heptathlon, setting a personal best in the javelin that helped her climb to 14th in the points standings. García Arias will represent Idaho in the first heat of the 400-meter hurdles Friday afternoon.
What Comes Next
The Big Sky Conference outdoor championships continue Friday in Portland with competition beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific time. The men’s javelin and women’s high jump are the first events scheduled for the morning session.
Track events kick off at 1 p.m. with the men’s and women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. The final two days of competition are available to watch on ESPN+, with live results posted on AthleticLive.
For the Vandals, Tait’s individual events Friday provide opportunities to add to her championship haul and continue building momentum heading toward the NCAA regional meet. Her record-breaking performances in Portland have already established her as one of the top multi-event athletes in the conference.
