The University of Idaho women’s soccer team remained undefeated Tuesday night despite surrendering its first goal of the season in a 1-1 tie against Western Michigan in Moscow.
Playing the opening match of the Outrigger Invitational, Idaho improved to 2-0-1 on the year. Hallie Prinos-Grumbach scored for the Vandals in the first half, converting a right-footed finish into the bottom-left corner off an assist from Miranda Goldner. The goal marked Prinos-Grumbach’s second of the season, and Idaho took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Western Michigan equalized late in the match when Camryn Huhn scored unassisted with 14 minutes and 60 seconds remaining. The goal ended Idaho’s 256-minute scoreless streak to begin the season—a streak that had carried through shutout wins over Washington State and CSUN.
Defensive Battle
Both teams generated significant offensive pressure. Idaho recorded 11 total shots with 5 on goal, led by Tori Peters, who attempted three times. Sara Rodgers, Quinn Mueller, and Payton Oelkers each contributed two shots, with Mueller putting both of hers on frame.
Western Michigan matched the Vandals’ intensity with 12 shots, six of which tested goalkeeper Paula Flores. Flores made four saves to preserve the draw.
The result marked the first meeting in program history between Idaho and Western Michigan soccer. Despite the goal conceded, the defensive effort kept the Vandals unbeaten while facing an opponent that created nearly as many scoring chances.
Looking Ahead
Idaho’s next test comes Saturday when the team travels to Honolulu to face Hawai’i at 5 p.m. PT (2 p.m. HT) as the Outrigger Invitational continues. The Vandals’ ability to maintain their unbeaten streak while allowing their first goal of the season suggests a team capable of competing in close contests—a quality that could prove valuable as conference play approaches.
The Idaho football program has similarly emphasized depth and competitive growth under its coaching staff, reflecting a broader institutional commitment to building championship-caliber programs across sports. Women’s soccer’s early success adds to the momentum building within Vandal athletics this fall.
