Idaho will receive $3.9 million in federal funding to support AmeriCorps volunteer programs, marking a restoration of grant support after significant cuts earlier this year. The funding announcement came Monday and flows through Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, which administers the state’s AmeriCorps initiatives.
The federal allocation breaks into two categories: $2.1 million awarded through a competitive grant process and $1.8 million distributed through formula funding. The competitive grants support programs at Idaho State University and the Student Conservation Association, while formula funding reaches the University of Idaho, the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute, Teach for America, and the Central Idaho Mountain Bike Association.
Recovery From Spring Funding Crisis
The announcement represents recovery from a dramatic reversal in AmeriCorps funding that unfolded over several months. In April 2025, federal officials terminated more than $1 million in grants designated for Idaho—part of a much broader nationwide action. On April 25, 2025, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cancelled approximately $400 million in AmeriCorps grants across the country, representing 41 percent of the program’s total federal funding. The cuts directly affected 133 AmeriCorps volunteers in Idaho whose service commitments faced immediate jeopardy.
The funding cancellations sparked legal action. In June 2025, a federal judge ordered restoration of AmeriCorps funding for 24 states and Washington, D.C. that had sued to challenge the terminations. Idaho was not part of that initial litigation. However, by July 2025, federal authorities reinstated grant funding for all states, including Idaho, bringing AmeriCorps support levels back to previous levels across the country.
Emily Straubhar, Serve Idaho Program Manager, characterized the restored funding as validation of AmeriCorps’ community role. “These investments reflect the incredible impact AmeriCorps Volunteers make every day in Idaho communities,” Straubhar said.
