The University of Idaho men’s basketball program has signed Zubayr “Zuby” Toms to its roster as a freshman, finalizing the team’s lineup for the 2026-27 season. Toms, a guard who completed his senior year at Mode Prep in Liberty Lake, Washington—approximately 20 minutes from Spokane—brings versatility and scoring ability to the defending Big Sky Conference champions.
From Las Vegas to the Palouse
Toms originally hails from Las Vegas, where he attended Palo Verde High School. During his junior year with the Grizzlies, he posted significant performances, including a 36-point effort in a 61-54 victory over Western and a 26-point game in an 82-46 win against Southeast Career Tech. That season, he averaged 2.5 steals per game according to MaxPreps, establishing himself as a defensive contributor alongside his offensive output.
For his final high school season, Toms transferred to Mode Prep, where he competed at an elevated level. At the Grind Session Play-in Tournament in Kentucky, he averaged 27 points per game. During the Memphis Live Period in May, Toms recorded two games with 26 or more points while averaging 4.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Mode Prep finished that tournament undefeated at 4-0.
His spring performance earned him recognition as one of Washington’s six “Red Hot 17U Spring Prospects” by PrepHoops in June.
Early Graduation and Reclassification
Toms’ path to the University of Idaho included an unexpected timeline adjustment. Head coach Alex Pribble explained that the signing represented both opportunity and fit: “It’s just a perfect fit, and the perfect timing. Zuby had been planning on going back to prep school, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, he had the opportunity to graduate early and reclassify.”
Pribble added that Toms aligns with the program’s values and culture. “Zuby is our kind of guy, and the Idaho community is going to love him,” the coach said.
Completing a Championship Core
With Toms’ signing, Idaho’s roster now stands at the full complement of 16 players. The Vandals bring back four returners from last season’s conference championship squad, including Miles Klapper, Kristian Gonzalez, and Seth Joba. Those three combined for 148 appearances and 34 starts in 2025-26, providing continuity and leadership for the defending champions.
Pribble, now in his fourth season leading the program, has built a foundation that blends experience with talented newcomers. The roster construction positions Idaho to defend its conference title heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
The Vandals will begin preseason preparation in the coming weeks as they work to maintain their standing atop the Big Sky Conference.
