Idaho Offers License-Free Fishing June 13 with Family Events Near Latah County

Idaho anglers of all ages can cast a line without purchasing a license this Saturday, June 13, as the state holds its annual Free Fishing Day — one of the few days each year when residents can participate in the sport without the typical licensing requirement.

Organized events are planned in both Lewiston and Troy, giving Latah County-area families convenient access to guided introductions to the sport. Fish and Game staff and volunteers will be on hand at designated sites to provide loaner gear, tackle, and hands-on instruction for those new to fishing.

Open to All Ages, But Rules Still Apply

While the license requirement is waived for the day, all other Idaho fishing regulations remain fully in force. That means standard bag limits and gear restrictions still apply, and anglers are expected to follow the rules just as they would any other day on the water. The free-access day is intended to lower the barrier to entry for families and individuals who may never have tried the sport, not to suspend the conservation framework that keeps Idaho fisheries healthy.

A Gateway to Idaho’s Outdoor Heritage

The annual event reflects a broader effort to connect residents — especially younger generations — with Idaho’s rich fishing traditions. With rivers, lakes, and reservoirs spread across the Palouse and beyond, the state offers some of the Northwest’s most accessible fishing opportunities. Free Fishing Day is designed to help new anglers discover those resources firsthand, with experienced guides available to answer questions and help participants get started on the right foot.

Families looking for other ways to engage with Latah County’s community traditions can also explore the vibrant arts and cultural scene across Moscow and Pullman, where local venues continue to anchor year-round community programming.

For details on event locations and any additional activities planned for June 13, residents are encouraged to contact Idaho Fish and Game or check official state resources ahead of the weekend.
