Two Potlatch Residents Die After UTV Plunges Into River Near St. Maries
Two Latah County residents lost their lives Friday night after a utility terrain vehicle left a roadway and plunged into a river in Benewah County, according to the Idaho State Police.
The crash occurred shortly after 9:20 p.m. near the 9000 block of Railroad Grade Road outside St. Maries. A 52-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, both from Potlatch, were riding in a 2023 Can-Am Maverick Sport when the vehicle veered off the road, tumbled down an embankment, and entered the river.
Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
ISP is investigating the circumstances of the crash. Additional details on the Potlatch couple’s fatal single-vehicle crash near St. Maries are available as the investigation continues.

Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash. No additional information on the victims’ identities has been released pending family notification. Authorities have not indicated whether any other vehicles were involved.
