Two Potlatch Residents Die After UTV Plunges Into River Near St. Maries

A man and woman from Potlatch lost their lives late Friday evening after a side-by-side utility vehicle left a roadway, went down an embankment, and plunged into a river near St. Maries in Benewah County, according to the Idaho State Police.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. in the area of the 9000 block of Railroad Grade Road. ISP investigators said the pair were riding in a 2023 Can-Am Maverick Sport when the vehicle left the road. The man was 52 years old and the woman was 51. Neither was wearing a seat belt. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash. Officials have not released the names of the victims pending family notification.
