Moscow Farmers Market Opens 50th Season Saturday on Main Street in Idaho
The Moscow Farmers Market will kick off its 50th anniversary season this Saturday, May 2, marking half a century of connecting Latah County residents with locally grown agricultural products and handmade goods. The market runs every Saturday through October 31, rain or shine, along Main Street and in Friendship Square in downtown Moscow.
The milestone season represents a significant chapter in Moscow’s agricultural and community heritage. For five decades, the market has served as a gathering point for farmers, artisans, and families across the Palouse region — a tradition rooted in the same values of local production, self-reliance, and community commerce that define rural Idaho life.
50th Anniversary Events and Special Programming
To celebrate the golden anniversary, the market is launching The Golden Guessing Game, a season-long promotional event where shoppers can visit the City of Moscow Market Information tent each Saturday for a chance to win a limited-edition 50th anniversary tote bag and $50 in select vendor products. Limited-edition commemorative merchandise — including a tote bag and an 18-month anniversary calendar — will also be available for purchase while supplies last.
Programming throughout the season will reflect both local heritage and broader civic milestones. Every first Saturday of the month will feature the Moscow America 250 Commission booth, honoring the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Third Saturdays will feature the UI Extension Latah County Idaho Master Gardeners program, connecting gardeners of all experience levels with practical agricultural expertise from the University of Idaho.
Last Saturdays from June through September will feature the Power of Produce Club, a youth-focused program designed to encourage children to explore fresh, locally grown food. Live entertainment is scheduled most Saturdays in Friendship Square from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Several special dates are already on the calendar. On May 9, shoppers can attend a meet-and-greet with 2026 Market Poster artist Cori Dantini. August 8 marks the National Farmers Market Week celebration. On October 24, the market will relocate to the Jackson Street parking lot to accommodate the University of Idaho Homecoming Parade. The season closes October 31 with a Costume Contest.
Agriculture Faces Broader Pressures Even as Market Celebrates
The market’s 50th season arrives at a challenging time for Idaho agriculture more broadly. Farmers across the Palouse and throughout the state are navigating a difficult growing season. Poor snowpack conditions threaten to impact water availability for growers across Idaho, raising concerns about irrigation capacity heading into the summer months. Meanwhile, rising fertilizer and diesel costs — driven in part by international tensions — are squeezing profit margins for Idaho producers at a critical point in the planting calendar.
For small-scale farmers and vendors who rely on direct-to-consumer sales at markets like Moscow’s, those cost pressures make community market access more important than ever. The Moscow Farmers Market provides a direct economic channel for regional agricultural producers to reach consumers without absorbing the overhead costs associated with commercial distribution.
Market organizers note that SNAP/EBT, Washington State WIC, and SFMNP benefits are accepted, making locally grown food accessible to a broader cross-section of the community. The event is also Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. Per market rules, only ADA-defined service dogs are permitted on Main, Fourth, and Fifth Streets, though all other animals are welcome on adjacent sidewalks during market hours. The market is a nicotine-free event — no smoking, vaping, or tobacco use is permitted on the premises.
