Man, woman found dead in Juliaetta home – The Spokesman-Review

Man and Woman Found Dead Inside Juliaetta, Idaho Home; Latah County Sheriff Investigating

Latah County authorities are investigating after a man and a woman were discovered dead Thursday inside a home south of Juliaetta, Idaho, according to the Latah County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched at approximately 4:25 p.m. on April 24 to conduct a welfare check at 1721 State Highway 3. Upon entering the residence, deputies found two individuals deceased. The Latah County Sheriff’s Office identified them as Kent Rotchy, 66, and Krysta Rotchy, 65.

Sheriff Richie Skiles confirmed that the pair had been divorced but remained on friendly terms. According to the sheriff’s office, the two had continued to see each other as friends at the time of their deaths.

No Evidence of Third-Party Involvement

In a news release, the Latah County Sheriff’s Office stated that investigators found no indication that anyone else was present at or involved in the deaths. “There is no evidence that other individuals were present or involved with this tragic event,” the release stated.

Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt confirmed that the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform autopsies on both individuals. The results of those autopsies are expected to provide additional information about the circumstances and cause of death. No further details regarding the condition of the home or the manner of death were released by authorities as of Friday evening.

Law enforcement officials said the investigation remains active and ongoing. The Sheriff’s Office did not release additional information beyond what was included in the initial news release.

This incident follows recent law enforcement activity in the Juliaetta area. Latah County deputies previously responded to investigate an active scene in Juliaetta, reflecting the challenges that can face smaller rural communities in the region.

Multiple Agencies Assisted at the Scene

The Latah County Sheriff’s Office extended thanks to both the Moscow Police Department and Idaho State Police for their assistance in responding to the scene. The involvement of multiple agencies underscores the cooperative approach that law enforcement agencies across Latah County and northern Idaho routinely employ when responding to serious incidents in rural areas.

Juliaetta, a small community located in southern Latah County along the Potlatch River corridor, sits in a rural stretch of the Palouse region. The Highway 3 address where the bodies were discovered lies south of the Juliaetta townsite. Response times and coordination between agencies are critical in rural calls such as welfare checks, which can often turn into serious investigations.

The Latah County Sheriff’s Office has not indicated whether the deaths are being classified as homicide, suicide, accident, or natural causes, pending the outcome of the autopsies conducted by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office. Until those findings are released, the nature of the deaths remains officially undetermined.

Residents in the Juliaetta area with any information related to this matter are encouraged to contact the Latah County Sheriff’s Office directly.

What Comes Next

The investigation into the deaths of Kent and Krysta Rotchy remains open. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to complete autopsies, the results of which will likely shape the direction of the Latah County Sheriff’s Office investigation going forward. Authorities have not indicated a timeline for releasing further details to the public. Latah County News will continue to monitor this developing story and report on any findings as they are made available by law enforcement and the coroner’s office.
